Rainy Clash Decides Women’s Soccer Conference Champion
The stage was set to decide the Orange Empire Conference (OEC) women's soccer champion on Friday night as the Santiago Canyon College Hawks hosted the Saddleback College Bobcats. In steady rain throughout the entire contest, both teams showcased impressive flashes of skill and highlight-worthy plays, but it was the Bobcats who claimed the conference title with a 1–0 victory.
The Hawks, who finished second in the conference standings, will receive a top-three seed entering next week's 3C2A Southern Regional playoffs. They fired off 18 total shots on the night, controlled the majority of possession, and consistently unsettling Saddleback's offensive opportunities.
Freshman Faith Ammaan led the attack for the Hawks, unleashing four shots and putting two on frame. She served as the primary distributor on set pieces, creating several worthy chances for Santiago Canyon.
Freshman Lauren Wood recorded two shots of her own, with her second attempt narrowly missing the back of the net late in the match. Fellow freshmen Kristina Grimm and Christina Cosenza each registered two shots on target, while freshman Alyza Bernabe added one attempt.
Defensively, sophomores Karen Pedraza and Jordyn Gallegos anchored the back line, working tirelessly to disrupt Saddleback's offensive rhythm. Freshman Noelle Zuvic commanded the midfield for nearly the full 90 minutes, delivering a strong and steady performance.
Sophomore goalkeeper Mikayla Worcester turned in another standout showing, recording a career-high seven saves. One of those came on a second-half penalty kick, preserving a scoreless game at the time.
The Hawks conclude the regular season with an impressive 14-2-5 overall record and a 9-2-3 mark in conference play. They now await the Southern Regional playoff seeding, which will be announced on Sunday, November 16.
