Women’s Soccer Falls in 3C2A State Championship Semifinals
The journey has come to an end for the Santiago Canyon College women's soccer team after falling in the 3C2A State Championship semifinals to the Sierra College Wolverines, 3–1, last Friday afternoon at Saddleback College.
The Hawks concluded a season in which they were ranked as high as third in the state, according to the California Community College Soccer Coaches Association (3SCA) polls. They earned the second overall seed in the Southern Regional Tournament and ultimately secured the South's top seed in the State Championship Tournament.
In the state semifinals match against Sierra, the Hawks faced a three-goal deficit after allowing a trio of scores in the first half.
However, the Hawks did not let up, dominating possession for the majority of the second half on Sierra's side of the pitch. Freshman Noelle Zuvic put the Hawks on the board in the 54th minute with a deep strike that soared over the Wolverine goalkeeper's head, cutting the deficit to two.
Santiago Canyon continued to create opportunities, outshooting Sierra 14–2 in the second half. Sophomore Ayleen Jimenez nearly brought the match within one goal, but the assistant referee ruled that her shot—after hitting the crossbar and bouncing behind the goalkeeper—did not fully cross the goal line.
Jimenez led the Hawks with seven shot attempts, three of which were on target. Sophomore Clarissa Huerta followed with two shots. In total, 10 Hawks recorded at least one shot, with seven placing at least one attempt on goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Makayla Worcester tallied six saves, including a pair of standout stops that kept the Hawks within striking distance. It marked her fifth consecutive match with at least three saves, and she finished postseason play with a 3–1 record.
The Hawks ended the season with an overall record of 17–3–5, marking their 24th consecutive winning season. Additionally, they reached their 11th state championship in the past 19 seasons.
The Hawks will graduate eight sophomores, highlighted by first-team All-American, All-State and Orange Empire Conference Defensive Player of the Year Karen Pedraza; second-team All-American, All-State and first-team all-conference Ayleen Jimenez; All-Region and first-team all-conference selections Mia Lussier and Makayla Worcester; as well as second-team all-conference honorees Rayleen Chairez and Jordyn Gallegos.
