The Santiago Canyon College women's volleyball team showed grit on Wednesday afternoon, taking a set off undefeated Orange Coast College in conference play. Despite falling in four sets, the Hawks delivered a thrilling second-set victory behind a fast start and late composure.
SCC jumped out to a commanding 10–2 lead in the second set and never trailed. After Orange Coast rallied to tie the score at 24, the Hawks responded with back-to-back points to seal the set.
Sophomore Ashlyn Smith led the way with a team-high seven kills on 42 attempts, adding eight digs, two assists, and a solo block. Riley Bingel, also a sophomore, chipped in six kills, while sophomore Liean Navarro tallied four.
Freshman setter Amy Lewis recorded a career-best 14 assists and contributed a crafty dump-shot kill along with four digs.
Defensively, sophomore Jayden Sessom anchored the back row with a season-high 14 digs. She also added a kill and two service aces. Freshman Yulianna Ruiz had a strong day on the defensive end with nine digs.
