Comeback Falls Short Against Santa Ana
The Santiago Canyon College women's volleyball team hosted crosstown rival Santa Ana College in conference action on Wednesday afternoon. After dropping the first two sets, the Hawks rallied to take the third set, 25-22, but narrowly fell short of forcing a decisive fifth set, ultimately falling in four.
The Hawks found their rhythm in the third set and nearly extended the match. After trailing by six points early in the fourth, sophomore Riley Bingel sparked momentum from the service line, delivering three straight aces to pull within one, 7-6. The set went back and forth, but a late run by the Dons sealed the match.
Bingel recorded a season-high seven service aces and added 10 kills. Her defense also stood out, as she posted a career-high 13 digs. Sophomore Ashlyn Smith was, once again, the breadwinner to the offense for the ninth consecutive match. She bagged a team-high 12 kills. She committed just four errors while adding an ace, two solo blocks, and 17 digs.
Freshman Amy Lewis directed the offense with a career-high 32 assists, connecting with four different attackers. She also contributed a career-best 14 digs and two aces.
On defense, sophomore Jayden Sessom anchored the back row with a team-leading 20 digs while adding six kills. Sophomore Liean Navarro rounded out the top performers with five kills and 12 digs.
